Top Grub Part of Healthy Lunchbox Initiative
‘The Lunchbox Challenge’ has been created by Cambridgeshire County Council’s Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) Service with the support of Cambridgeshire Dietetic Business Unit.
A key component of the resource is the Top Grub
card game.
Participating Cambridgeshire primary and special schools are being given a ‘lunchbox’ containing a range of teaching resources and materials to support the children in delivering the ‘Lunchbox Challenge’, including the Top Grub card game. The other resource materials include a CD and booklet of materials, including lesson plans and a script for the ‘Lunchbox Challenge’ play. The Top Grub cards are incorporated into some of the suggested lesson plans and they can also be used to create some of the props used in the play.
Diane Fenner, Healthy Schools Co-ordinator for Cambridgeshire says: “Eating a healthy diet and the importance of introducing children to the nutritional values of different foods has never been more important. Our ‘Lunchbox Challenge’ Programme is intended to extend work on healthy eating in schools to include packed lunches within the context of a unit of work for PSHE. We are inviting schools to take part in the ‘Challenge’ and to help evaluate its effectiveness in delivering the healthy eating message.”
The scheme was launched at Bushmead Primary School in
St Neots, Cambridgeshire on 19th October.
Across Cambridgeshire, a total of 220 ‘Lunchbox Challenge’ packs will be sent out encouraging schools to participate in the programme and take part in the evaluation over the next nine months. For more information about the Lunchbox Challenge programme contact the Cambridgeshire PSHE Service on
