This pack is designed for front line staff working with children with learning disabilities who have encopresis, toilet refusal or the need for bowel training. We hope the pack will also be helpful for parents.

This evidence-based resource and training pack for practitioners is based on the “Parent Partnership” model. It combines materials on encopresis and constipation in normally developing children, communication with children with learning disability, and communication with parents.

The pack is presented in 9 sections:
•Establishing a relationship and exploring
parent’s concerns

•Exploring the nature of the problem
•Forming a clear model
•Setting goals
•Planning strategies
•Implementation
•Review
•Ending
•Teacher’s manual

The folder contains over 200 colour pages of training materials.

The materials were designed and evaluated by a specialist multi-disciplinary team as part of a three year research project.

Practitioners involved in the evaluation said:
“I have found the pack very useful, especially all of the parent information and assessment section.

I utilise these on all of my new assessments and visits.”

“The pack has been a very useful reference resource both for the identification of constipation, and for behaviour techniques to start toilet training in children who might find the process particularly difficult.”

June Rogers MBE describes the pack as “An excellent new resource which is a much needed tool to assist health practitioners assess children with soiling and learning difficulties in a holistic way.”
